This is a collection of data visualizations and online projects I’ve made while at EdSource. Tons of variety here in format, style and development. It’s been really exciting having the space at EdSource to experiment with new ideas.
It’s actually exciting to see how I’ve evolved as a developer through these projects. Whenever I undertake a new project, I try to incorporate something new so I can continue growing. Working in a team of one on the development side makes it difficult to learn without applying this kind of thinking.
Many of these projects rely on templates. When you don’t have a huge staff to build and maintain projects, templatizing is the only way to go. Some of the projects I make for EdSource can easily be adapted for use by other news organizations or interested parties. You can find many of these projects on my GitHub page.
Here are a few highlighted projects from my time at EdSource:
- Visualizing vaccination rates at California kindergarten schools, a winner of an Education Writers Association award in 2014;
- Database of Smarter Balanced test results, the first time this test was administered in California schools and within the context of the state’s shift toward the Common Core standards;
