The Gimme Props! ballot measure guide built by myself and six other journalism students for the 2012 election was honored as a finalist for the 2013 Online News Association Awards in the Student Project, Large category.
This was a great honor highlighting the hard work that went into building what was for most of us our first major coding project. We experimented with gaming and other forms of multimedia in the project. Our goal with the project was to see if we could better communicate details about what are often-important ballot measures to a younger audience. The feedback we got from others was very positive.
Although it would have been awesome to WIN the award, being a finalist shows that our work was respected and our experimentation was appreciated. I really want to resurrect this project for the 2016 elections somehow. It would be awesome to circle back around with the coding skills I have today.
